The Terrapins softball team lost both games of its doubleheader Saturday against Georgia Tech in its ACC opener at Robert E. Taylor Stadium.

In Game 1, the Yellow Jackets scored a run in each of the first three innings off starting pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser on their way to a 7-4 win.

Trailing 5-1 in the fifth, RBI singles by infielder Bridget Hawvermale and outfielder Madison Martin cut the Yellow Jacket lead in half. Georgia Tech responded in the sixth, however, scoring two insurance runs off relief pitcher Jaymi Bautista-Geiger to secure the victory.

In the second game, the Terps fell 4-1. Georgia Tech opened up the scoring with a run as well, this time by way of a sac fly. The game stayed this way until the fourth, when starting pitcher Brenna Nation allowed Georgia Tech to score three additional runs. Nation allowed seven hits in four runs before being replaced by Schmeiser with one out in the sixth.

The Terps’ lone run came on a Schmeiser RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Schmeiser, who had been battling a hamstring injury for most of the season, produced four hits and two RBI.

Two unlikely players also stepped up big at the plate today. Martin had only four at bats on the season entering Saturday, but went 3-for-4 in Game 1. Infielder Jessica Warner — who was playing her season debut after being out with several injuries — had three hits. The Terps have scored two or less runs in 14 games..

The Terps will look to avoid the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
