University Police arrested an 18-year-old University Park man on Monday for allegedly grabbing a female student as she swam in the ODK fountain last month.

Robert Monroe was charged with second-degree assault and a fourth-degree sex offense, according to University Police spokesman Capt. Marc Limansky. He will stand trial Aug. 10, according to court records.

The arrest came about three weeks after police arrested another suspect in the incident -18-year-old Tavon Dametrius Clark of Bowie faces seven charges, including theft of less than $1,000 and stealing anothers’ credit card.

Limansky said officers were able to identify Monroe through continued interviews.

On June 9, three female students reportedly stripped off their clothing to swim in the fountain on McKeldin Mall when six to eight males and two females approached them, police said. Monroe allegedly grabbed a female student’s buttocks before the group fled with the victims’ property and clothing.

Later that morning, officers recovered many of the victims’ belongings, which the suspects reportedly dropped around the campus, police said.

University Police plan to continue pursuing the other six to eight suspects in the incident Limansky said.

“As each person is interviewed, it leads to more information,” he said. “There’s nothing fancy about it, just old-fashioned talking to people.”
