Katie Schwarzmann
Katie Schwarzmann made history last night.
The Terrapins women’s lacrosse midfielder scored five goals to pace an 11-8 win over Towson, becoming just the fourth Terp in program history to reach the 200-goal mark.
The No. 1 Terps (12-0) struggled out of the gates, as they allowed the Tigers (1-7) to notch two of the contest’s first three goals.
But with 22:46 left, Schwarzmann had seen enough. The senior rattled off two straight goals in a 10-minute period to give the Terps their first lead of the contest, one which they never relinquished.
Towson refused to back down, however, as they went on a 2-0 run of their own to tie the contest at four with 8:23 left in the first period. The Terps struck right back, as Schwarzmann found attacker Halle Majorana and midfielder Brooke Griffin for another two goals.
A Towson tally by way of attacker Olivia Turner cut the Terps’ lead to one by the half. The one-goal lead marked the Terps’ slimmest of the year at intermission.
Knowing her squad needed a boost, Schwarzmann took the lead. The senior captain rattled off three straight goals to effectively end all hopes of a Tigers comeback.
Maintaining the persistence they possessed all game, however, the Tigers answered back with three goals of their own, cutting the deficit to three with 1:29 left. But it was ultimately too little too late, as the Terps would go on to claim their 12th win in a row.
Aside from a meeting against North Carolina on April 6, the remainder of the Terps’ schedule doesn’t feature any competition against ranked opponents, as Penn, Princeton, Dartmouth and Virginia Tech all sit outside the top 20.
If the Terps can get past the No. 3 Tar Heels, chances are good they will end up with their first undefeated regular season since 2011.
As long as they have Schwarzmann and attacker Alex Aust — the No. 4 points scorer in the nation — leading the way, it’ll be tough for anyone to knock off the Terps.
