One of my favorite things in the world is getting an email from my building telling me that I have a package waiting for me at the front desk. As a fellow broke college student, I don’t have the money to buy all the loads of useless nerd toys that I’d like to have. Fortunately, LootCrate offers a solution.

LootCrate, a monthly package subscription service, will send a box of nerdy goodies to you once a month for $20 (including shipping). The great part about the boxes is that there is usually an item inside that outweighs the cost of the box, whether it be a figurine, a t-shirt or a book. Each crate carries a theme, which has included equip, token, and cosmos in the past. October’s theme was survive and was filled to the brim with zombie goods.

The October box was my first, and I was excited to shred it open as soon as I got it. Shipping was quick; it took two days to arrive after I got a confirmation email. After opening it, I was ecstatic to find out that this month’s box was worth around $50! I received a cool “EWOKING DEAD,” t-shirt — replacing the characters from The Walking Dead with Ewoks from Star Wars. In addition, I got The Zombie Survival Guide, a popular humor novel by Max Brooks. (This book is startlingly in-depth and is a must have in-case of zombie apocalypse!) I also got some zombie temporary tattoos, pixel-y zombie buttons, an Official LootCrate Zombie Hunter ID and a marshmallow eyeball to snack on. My favorite thing from this box has to be the “I Love Your Guts” greeting card that depicts a bloodied up zombie on the front.

In addition to these goodies, each LootCrate member is signed up to receive a $250 “Mega Crate” filled with other trinkets that fit the theme. October’s Mega Crate was a box of what were designer Nerf guns. August’s got a Portal gun, which I’m still super jealous of.

Package subscription services have become fairly popular over the past year and you can find boxes of anything — make-up, art supplies and more. LootCrate is my favorite among them. Even though I’m not a big fan of Star Wars, Star Trek or some other series that tend to be in these boxes, I know family and friends who love it them and are more than happy to take the undesirables off my hands! (My lucky friend got the Ewoking Dead shirt this month.)

You can sign up or read more about LootCrate through their website.
