Animator Monty Oum died at age 33 Sunday afternoon due to a severe allergic reaction to a medical procedure that left him in a coma for 10 days, according to Rooster Teeth.

Oum was known for his work on animations such as Dead Fantasy, Haloid, Red vs. Blue and his most recent and well-known work, RWBY.

RWBY was Oum’s most popular work; it was translated to Japanese, with specialized merchandise and a video game following. This amount of popularity is extremely uncommon among American-created shows.

He served as an inspiration for many aspiring animators and story writers, proving that with hard work, anything can be achieved.

“He taught me a lot about how valuable time is and how it should never be wasted,” Oum’s co-worker Gavin Free wrote in a Rooster Teeth blog. “This was so visible in his work. Why waste time just reloading a sniper rifle when you can use the recoil to slice an enemy’s head off?”

“I always really admired him for working so hard and being so passionate about what he created, and I was always so inspired when he talked about how much he loved what he did,” sophomore psychology major Max Balagtas-Badoy said.

His death affected many, including popular YouTube celebrities such as the Game Grumps and professional League of Legends players such as Dyrus and Doublelift.

“This year I want to start making an animated series, I feel like that’s what Monty would want me to do. It’s what Monty would want YOU to do. Go out there and create art. Music, animation, movies… Anything your heart desires. Honor Monty by creating your art,” Game Grump Ross O’Donovan wrote on his blog.

Oum inspired his fans and friends alike to work hard, and his legacy will not be forgotten.

There is a GoFundMe to help his family pay for his medical costs and family support that people can donate to, if they wish.
