After being asked to write about a movie I believe every student must see before they graduate, I searched my mind for the most impactful, inspiring and respected movie of all time. I wanted to write about a movie that was undeniable. I wanted readers to nod their heads in agreement, noting that the movie was in fact list-worthy. However, it turns out that at end of that tiresome thought process only one movie came to mind: Despicable Me.
You all must think I’m joking. How could I choose Despicable Me over classics such as Titanic or The Shawshank Redemption? Well, this Universal Pictures film is not only the cutest, sweetest and most genuine movie made in recent years, but it leaves all who watch it with a craving for more.
The storyline, although simple, has an unmistakable message that will warm your heart. It features Gru, a failing villain, and his attempt to redeem his villainous status by stealing the moon. In order for his wicked plot to succeed, Gru adopts three orphans and uses them as a ploy in his scheme. However, these girls touch his heart unexpectedly and eventually change his life and mindset. Instead of the villain he always wished to be, Gru transforms into the hero these girls always longed for.
The movie preaches self-sacrifice and the importance of giving up one’s own wants for others. There is no age limit to this masterpiece. Anybody and everybody can relate to this everlasting tale of true love, this story of parenthood and the bond one creates with the people one cares about. It is a fun movie with a special meaning and definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it already.
