The Terrapins women’s basketball team is down yet another player after guard Laurin Mincy tore her ACL and is out for the season, the team announced this morning.
Mincy becomes the third Terp to suffer a torn ACL this season. Guard Brene Moseley went down in practice Oct. 21 and center Essence Townsend was injured in the team’s Nov. 5 exhibition game against Goldey-Beacom.
After a strong start against No. 21 Nebraska on Wednesday where she had scored 16 points and shot 4-for-4 from three-point range, Mincy was hurt about five minutes into the second half when a Cornhuskers player stole the ball from her at midcourt. Mincy exited and never returned. The No. 11 Terps would go on to beat Nebraska, 90-71.
Starting all five games for the Terps this season, Mincy was averaging 8.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. A Preseason All-ACC Team selection, Mincy was also named to watch lists for the Naismith and Wooden awards after she averaged 13.1 points per game last year.
“She was our best defensive stopper on the perimeter,” coach Brenda Frese said on a conference call this morning. “We could match her up with a point guard, we could match her up on the wing. That’s going to be difficult to overcome.”
Mincy tore her left ACL in high school, forcing her to miss her senior season at University High School in Newark, N.J., and this latest injury is to her right knee.
Guard Katie Rutan and forward Tierney Pfirman can be expected to see more time at the shooting guard position, with forward Alyssa Thomas seeing more time running the offense.
The Terps travel to Hartford, Conn., on Monday to take on No. 2 Connecticut in the Jimmy V Classic.
