Last week, Elizabeth Whiting, a blogger for The Diamondback, wrote about the debate regarding women’s Halloween costumes and how they have progressed from what is considered a costume, to lingerie.
While I agree with Whiting when she said, “As a girl, it is fun to wear something flirty, but you will not see me walking around in a bra and boy shorts combo calling myself a bear because I put some costume ears on.” It’s cold around Halloween (ain’t nobody got time for sickness) and I like being creative with costumes but I don’t agree with the responses from senior Angie Jain and Joel Cas.
Jain said, “Girls who wear slutty clothes on Halloween are girls who crave attention. Using a ‘holiday’ as an excuse to look like a slut doesn’t hide the secret of you being a slut. Women should maintain at least some level of class.”
Cas said, “Honestly, they do it for the attention, it’s the only time of the year where people don’t judge them for being what they really are…sluts.”
Wow.
First let’s start with Jain’s comments.
Anyone who dresses up for Halloween craves attention, you’re wearing a costume, meaning you’ll get some reaction. Sorry, that’s just how it works.
Jain and Cas shared similar responses about how Halloween doesn’t “hide that you’re really a slut.”
I’m just so tired of society’s use of the word slut, the degradation of women and double standards. I know that everyone has their own definition of what a slut is, but it drives me crazy when people call women sluts because they are wearing revealing clothing. Don’t see this happening for men.
I’m waiting for the day when society won’t pass judgment on my sexual history by the way I am dressed. I don’t agree with Cas when he said that Halloween is the only day where women don’t get judged for being a slut. I doubt that’s true — tell me you aren’t judgmental when you see a woman wearing a crop top and shorts at the bar.
It’s not a Halloween thing; it’s a societal thing.
The last note I have is how both Cas and Jain talked about the revelation that a woman is a slut. BREAKING NEWS: a woman is a slut. WHO CARES?
Since Whiting opened her blog with a reference from Mean Girls about how in girl world, Halloween is the one time where a girl can dress as a total slut and no one else can pass judgment, I’m going to end my blog with referencing the famous Kevin G.
To all the ladies out there, for Halloween and every other day, follow the words of Kevin G. “Don’t let the haters stop you from doing your thang.”
