I’m almost 20 years old, and I spent most of my winter break playing Toontown.
I remember playing the Disney-owned game as a young’un for a sweet week — that was all the free trial allowed. It was a subscription-based game and my parents, who frowned upon my constant computer usage, would never pay for something like that.
I Googled the game a couple months ago and learned Disney has since taken the game down. However, a couple of diehard fans took the liberty of putting a retooled version back up for people to play for FREE.
This was my chance.
I downloaded the game, but it didn’t really pique my interest. During winter break, I’d log on and play for a bit while my friends were playing League of Legends. (I did this when the team was full, leaving no room for poor ol’ Julia.)
The premise of the game is similar to that of any MMORPG. You grind and get better abilities so you can take on stronger enemies. The only catch is that you’re a Disney cartoon animal, your abilities are “gags” and all the enemies are “Cogs.” Gags include skills like throwing pies or making pianos fall on evil robots’ heads.
I brought up the game to my friends as a joke one time, but then they all started play too. Pretty soon we were yelling “Get f—–!” while throwing pies at robots in a children’s game. Thus began the decline of our winter break.
(Can you see the death in our eyes as it’s almost 3 a.m.?)
We were addicted to a game meant for 10-year-olds. We have a mass iMessage group labeled “TOONSQUAD,” including emojis of all the animals we play as.
I can’t put my finger on exactly what makes this game so addicting. Nothing about it is fun. It’s just constant grinding and quest-completing, and on top of that, most quests are nearly impossible without a team of people. (TOONSQUAD, assemble!) For some reason, I keep logging on for more.
The game is played mostly by older people who remembered it from childhood. I met other college students as well as many parents who played with their kids.
On a whim one night, I teamed up with a bunch of other random players to take down a Cog building, only to be told that one of my random teammates is a student at this university. Shoutout to you, Remus the brown cat.
If you’re looking for some nostalgia or just a way to procrastinate, give Toontown Rewritten a shot.
