Maryland gymnastics coach Brett Nelligan hired Evan Eigner as an assistant, according to a release Friday.
Eigner joins the Terps staff after competing for the Ohio State and Temple University gymnastics teams over the past four years. He also served as an instructor for Ohio State men’s gymnastics summer camp last year and spent five years as a coach at the International Gymnastics Camp.
“I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with a program with such a bright future,” Eigner said in a release. “I have followed this team for years and have always had the utmost respect for … the entire athletic department at Maryland. I’m excited to [begin] working with the Terps.”
Eigner has family ties to high-level gymnastics, as his father Fred Turoff was a U.S. World Team member in 1970 and an Olympic assistant coach for Team USA in 1992. In addition, his father is a member of the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame and Temple Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Terps hope Eigner can draw on his background to help the program return to the postseason.
“We’re excited to welcome [Eigner] to the team and staff,” Nelligan said. “[Eigner] was an accomplished gymnast and comes from an exceptional gymnastics family. I have no doubt he will bring new ideas and energy to the program.”
