University Police responded to reports of an assault and a domestic dispute, among other incidents this past week, according to police reports.
Assault
University of Maryland Police responded to police headquarters June 9 at about 8:40 p.m. after a report of an assault. Two males not affiliated with the university were playing soccer on the Engineering Fields when the suspect “attempted to kick the victim in the head,” University Police spokeswoman Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas said. The victim blocked the kick with his forearm, she added, but the suspect punched him in the head.
“The suspect did not like how the victim was playing,” Hoaas said.
The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Hoaas wrote in an email. This case is active.
Accident
University Police responded to an accident on Campus Drive on Friday at 11:35 p.m. A female student driving a van was traveling south on Championship Drive when she drove through a gate, crossed Campus Drive and crashed into the Gateway Market convenience store in the Domain apartments, Hoaas wrote. She was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and it is unknown yet whether charges will be filed, according to NBC4.
Police are investigating the accident.
Domestic dispute
On Saturday at about 9:15 p.m., University Police responded to the 3400 block of Tulane Drive to a report of a domestic dispute.
A female student witnessed an argument between her roommates — a male student and a female student — and called University Police, Hoaas said.
“There was no physical fighting between the two of them,” she added.
Officers gave those involved information on the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct. This case is active.
Theft
University Police arrested three males in connection with a theft on Sunday at 3:52 a.m. near Mowatt Lane Garage, according to police reports.
Officers were in the area for a previous call when they noticed four individuals near the parking garage who appeared to be “sawing something by the bike rack,” Hoaas said. Once the group saw the officers coming, they ran away, but University Police were able to stop three of them.
One individual was an adult male, and the other two were juveniles. The juveniles — one of whom had a bolt cutter with him — were taken to the University Police station and released to their guardians, Hoaas wrote. They will be charged in the juvenile court system with theft of less than $1,000 and malicious destruction of property.
The adult male, 18-year-old Juan A. Cueva from Hyattsville faced the same charge along with fourth-degree burglary, second-degree burglary, forced entry, unlawful entry and two counts of contribute to conditions of child.
University Police were unable to confirm any of the individuals’ affiliation with the university.
