The Maryland men’s basketball team will face Georgetown at the Verizon Center on Nov. 15 as a part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games, the university announced Tuesday.
In the same event last year, coach Mark Turgeon’s squad pulled out a 75-71 home victory. That meeting marked the first time in more than 40 years the teams squared off in College Park.
“We are excited to continue the series with Georgetown,” Turgeon said in a statement. “Last season’s game was a tremendous experience for our University, program and fans. It will be an outstanding early season game against a well- coached Georgetown team that we have a lot of respect for.”
Fresh off a season in which the Terps reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in 13 years, their battle with Georgetown will be the only rematch from last year’s Gavitt Games, which annually pits squads from the Big East and Big Ten against one another.
The other Big Ten programs participating in this year’s series include Purdue, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Iowa, Ohio State, Rutgers and Minnesota. The Big East’s representatives include defending national champion Villanova, Creighton, Butler, Seton Hall, Providence, DePaul, and St. John’s.
