When the Jacksonville Jaguars selected former Maryland football defensive end Yannick Ngakoue with the No. 69-overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Ngakoue was the Terps second player to be drafted Friday night.
Former Maryland defensive back Sean Davis joined the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 58th-overall selection less than an hour earlier.
With the selection, Ngakoue is the program’s third in-state player to be drafted in the past two years. Davis is a Washington native, while the Minnesota Vikings selected former Good Counsel and Terps wide receiver Stefon Diggs in the fifth round last year.
The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Bowie native left the Terps after completing his junior season with 13.5 sacks. That mark set a program record and ranked second in the nation. Ngakoue also recorded 38 tackles and forced one fumble in his 11 starts during the 2015 season.
During the campaign, Ngakoue teamed up with former Terps defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson, who ranked second on the team with 6.5 sacks. Jefferson also turned professional after the season and will wait to see if his name is called in Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre before the draft ends Saturday.
Due to a reporting error, a previous version of this story incorrectly stated the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Yannick Ngakoue in the second round in the headline and in the story. He was picked in the third round. This story has been updated to reflect the correction.
