With fog hanging in the hair, the Maryland baseball team took on Penn State at Medlar Field in State College, Pennsylvania, on Friday night. The Terps had faced similar weather conditions Tuesday night against James Madison, earning the win after a two-hour rain delay.
Despite the chilly conditions against the Nittany Lions, the Terps again earned a victory. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the fourth inning to end the game with a 7-1 triumph. The win is the team’s fourth in a row, tying their longest winning streak this year.
Right-hander Mike Shawaryn stifled the Nittany Lions with a complete-game, six-strikeout performance. He limited Penn State to four hits. With the outing, Shawaryn became the program’s all-time leader in career strikeouts.
Left fielder Marty Costes opened up the scoring early with a single to drive in second baseman Nick Dunn. The Terps continued to roll in the third inning when shortstop Kevin Smith knocked in center field Zach Jancarski. Smith scored later in the frame after a Penn State throwing error.
Smith finish the game 3-for-5 at the plate one RBI and two runs scored.
Coach John Szefc’s squad added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, including a solo home run from designated hitter Madison Nickens. The blast to right center was his third RBI of the evening.
