A fire broke out Thursday afternoon at Plato’s Diner, but it is now under control and there were no injuries, a Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department spokesman said.

The department received a call at 12:16 p.m. and were on the scene at the Route 1 restaurant almost immediately, said Alan Doubleday, the department’s assistant fire chief.

The fire began in the grill area in the kitchen, and Doubleday said the department believes it was accidental. The flames primarily affected the kitchen and the surrounding air ducts, causing plumes of smoke to rise from the roof of the building.

The scope of the damage is not yet known, but Doubleday said Plato’s will close for the time being until repairs are made.

Ten trucks and about 40 firefighters arrived and were able to control the fire before 1 p.m., although they are still opening up the walls and will remain on the scene and redirecting northbound traffic on Route 1 to Guilford Road.
