In its first conference game of the season, the Terrapins softball team lost, 12-2, to Ohio State to extend its season-high losing streak to six games.
The Buckeyes offense got to pitcher Hannah Dewey early. She walked four batters in the first inning and allowed two runs.
The Temecula, California, native did not fare better in the next frame, as she allowed three more runs and was replaced in the pitching circle by Brenna Nation.
Nation then allowed a three-run home run in the third inning to outfielder Alex Bayne, giving the Buckeyes a 9-1 lead.
Bayne, who finished the game 3-for-3 with seven RBIs, hit another three-run blast in the fourth frame.
Meanwhile, Buckeyes hurler Shelby Hursh, who entered the game with a 1.26 ERA, quieted the Terps’ bats. She struck out the side and did not allow a hitter to make contact in the first inning.
She struggled with pitch location in the third, though, and walked infielder Emily Libero to lead off the inning. The Terps drew seven walks in the game.
Outfielder Sarah Calta put the Terps on the board with an RBI triple to center field, knocking in Libero with two outs. Calta went 1-for-2 with a walk to continue her hot streak. She is batting .379 over the past three weekends.
And despite her struggles in the pitching circle, Dewey also had a strong day at the plate. She drew three walks and leads the team in that category with 14 on the season.
But her offensive production was not enough for the Terps, who allowed 12 runs on 10 hits and lost via the run-rule. They will face the Buckeyes again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
