The Terrapins softball team was frustrated by its 0-3 showing in the Maryland Invitational this weekend. It was the team’s first time playing at Maryland Softball Stadium this season.

“We want to play well at home,” coach Julie Wright told Testudo Times. “We didn’t do that this weekend and that was disappointing because we want to build a fan base and we want to bring a great product to the community.”

Besides a strong start at the plate in a 5-4 loss against Massachusetts on Friday, the Terps (7-20) failed to back up their faltering pitchers with run production all weekend. They fell 10-1 to North Dakota State and 9-3 to Binghamton.

“We could have done a better job just learning from each other’s at-bats,” catcher Kristina Dillard said.

Outfielder Sarah Calta, who went 3-for-8 with two walks after regaining her No. 2 spot in the batting order this weekend, added that the team needed to show better pitch selection.

In all three losses, opposing pitchers threw complete games against the Terps.

“It was a lack of execution on our part,” Wright said about her team’s display against Binghamton pitcher Cara Martin, who went seven innings and allowed just three runs.

Wright said the team worked all week in practice on facing the down-change pitch — Martin’s specialty — but still wasn’t able to figure it out in the game.

The Terps, who scored eight runs over three games, missed infielder Lindsey Schmeiser’s presence. Schmeiser leads the team with four home runs despite not playing for weeks due to a back injury.

Infielder Corey Schwartz, who led the team with 15 home runs a year ago, went 1-for-8 over the weekend. Infielder Sarah Lang, meanwhile, started two games at first base but went 0-for-6.

Rainy conditions presented a challenge for players throughout the weekend and the Terps’ two games on Saturday were canceled because of the wet conditions.

Wright said she didn’t believe weather was a factor in the team’s performance.

Rather than looking for excuses, the first-year coach stressed the importance of looking ahead to make the end of the season more positive.

“We’re putting this first half behind us,” Wright said. “We’ve got to move forward.”
