The Terrapins men’s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2003 Sunday. They celebrated this historic achievement Monday with a pep rally in front of Xfinity Center.
The event was initially scheduled for approximately 4 p.m., but few fans were stationed outside the Terps’ home arena.

The pep rally was delayed due to logistical problems, and as word spread across campus, more fans began to arrive. When the team bus finally pulled up to the curb, several hundred fans and numerous media members were there to greet them.

Coach Mark Turgeon and senior guard Rasheed Sulaimon addressed the fans. Both thanked them for their support. “We do it for you guys,” said Sulaimon, sporting large sunglasses. “Hopefully, we can continue to make you guys proud.”

Forward Robert Carter Jr., sporting a March Madness hat, also spoke to the media and even got Testudo’s attention. “We’re excited about this moment,” Carter said. “But we’re still looking forward.”

The men’s team is still alive, though. They’ll have to a chance to advance to the Elite Eight when they face Kansas, the No. 1 overall seed, Thursday night.
