Terrapins baseball right-hander Brian Shaffer was named Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week after throwing his first-career complete game in a 1-0 win at No. 23 Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.
The sophomore struck out five and didn’t issue a walk. He threw 70 of his 99 pitches for strikes.
Shaffer, who holds a 2-1 record and 2.97 ERA on the season, allowed seven hits, but just three Titans advanced past first base. His previous career-high in innings pitched was seven.
Sunday marked the first time a Terps pitcher threw a complete game in under 100 pitches since 2014. The Pylesville, Maryland, native forced Cal State Fullerton’s first shutout at home since April 14, 2013.
Shaffer’s performance helped coach John Szefc’s squad to a 2-1 series win over the Titans and its fourth consecutive series victory. The Terps weekend rotation allowed just seven runs to Cal State Fullerton in three games.
The six-foot-five, 200-pound pitcher allowed a combined six runs in 7.1 innings in his first two starts this season. In his past three starts, though, he’s allowed four runs over 21.1 innings.
Shaffer shared the award with Indiana left-hander Caleb Barager.
