The Terrapins softball team, trying to earn its first win of the weekend, took an early lead against Binghamton in the final game of the Maryland Invitational.
The Terps couldn’t hold onto the advantage, however, losing, 9-3, after allowing eight combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Catcher Kristina Dillard got the Terps off to a promising start with a two-run single in the third. The hit was one of eight for the Terps, who put 10 total runners on base but managed to score just three runs.
Outfielder Sarah Calta was a bright spot for the team. She continued her strong play recently by going 2-for-3 and drawing a walk.
Things began well for pitcher Hannah Dewey. Just like in her Friday outing against Massachusetts, she breezed through the first couple of innings.
But after not allowing a hit during her first time through the Bearcats order, she ran into trouble in the fourth inning. She allowed three hits and a walk and was replaced by Brenna Nation, who allowed a three-run triple to infielder Kate Richard.
Nation gave up three more runs in the fifth as the deficit eventually ballooned to 8-2.
The defeat was the third for the Terps in three games in the invitational. They have now lost five consecutive games, their longest losing streak of the season.
