Looking to take a road trip to watch the Terrapins men’s basketball team take on South Dakota State in the NCAA Tournament? If you haven’t already made plans, it might be too late.
According to Google Maps, it takes 34 hours to drive from College Park to Spokane Arena, the site of Maryland’s first-round matchup. The teams tip off at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. To get there right at game time, fans planning on carpooling to the game would have to leave by Thursday at 6:30 a.m. – and that’s not even accounting for traffic or bathroom breaks. So if you’re reading this, you should have already left for Spokane.
Maryland and Hawaii have the longest trips in the South Region, as the Rainbow Warriors have to travel about 400 more miles than the Terps do.
Teams traveling to Spokane:
Seed | Team | Distance (in miles) | Hours (by car) |
4 | California | 862 | 13.4 |
5 | Maryland | 2,480 | 34 |
12 | South Dakota State | 1,244 | 16.87 |
13 | Hawai’i | 2,882 | Cars can’t go underwater |
Why is Washington, which borders Canada, a site for the South Region when it is one of the Northernmost states in the country? That’s a topic for another day.
Maryland seems to have really drawn the short end of the stick here, as commutes to Brooklyn, Providence and Des Moines (the other three locations in the South Region) are all about three hours away or less by plane.
If the Terps win their first two games, they’ll finally be playing somewhere that is actually in the South – Louisville, only about a nine-hour drive. That would be a much easier road trip for broke college students.
