The Terrapins softball team was overmatched once again by No. 13 Oklahoma in an 11-0 loss Sunday.
After falling to the Sooners, 11-2, on Saturday, the Terps’ pitching staff struggled to contain one of the more prolific offenses in the country.
Pitcher Brenna Nation, who threw a no-hitter against Saint Louis on Saturday, allowed seven runs (five earned) through five innings of work.
At the plate, the Terps (7-17) threatened in the first few innings but didn’t capitalize on their opportunities. In the first, infielder Skylynne Ellazar drew a leadoff walk but was thrown out attempting to steal second base.
The Terps put two on with two outs one frame later. But with infielder Corey Schwartz and outfielder Destiney Henderson on base, outfielder Sarah Calta grounded out to end the inning.
With two runners on again in the third, the Sooners brought in ace pitcher Paige Parker, who went 28-7 with a 1.65 ERA last year and won the 2015 NFCA Freshman of the Year award, to escape the jam. She got catcher Kristina Dillard to fly out and Schwartz to line out.
Parker, who was also named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year last season, shut down the Terps. She threw 3.2 innings of relief, gave up just one hit and allowed zero runs.
The Sooners won via the run rule on a walk-off grand slam in the sixth by infielder Paris Townsend. The blast came off Hannah Dewey, who allowed four runs in relief.
With the loss, the Terps drop to 10 games below .500. However, their 24-game stretch of road games to start the season is over and they will return home for the Maryland Invitational next weekend.
