The Terrapins softball team didn’t get off to the start it wanted to Friday in the Oklahoma Invitational.
The Terps’ pitchers struggled in an 11-2 loss to Saint Louis (8-7) and fell apart late in a 7-4 defeat to Brigham Young (13-8).
Pitcher Hannah Dewey allowed four hits, four walks and six runs in the first inning to Saint Louis. Freshman walk-on pitcher Sami Main did not fare much better in relief, surrendering five runs in five innings of work.
The Terps (6-15) didn’t have an answer to the Billikens’ offensive outburst. Even though they put nine runners on base, they only scored two runs.
There were bright spots in the team’s lineup, however. Outfielder Sarah Calta continued her resurgence with a 2-for-2 game, infielder Skylynne Ellazar went 2-for-3 and Dewey went 2-for-2 with a double and triple.
The Terps scored their runs on an Ellazar RBI single and a wild pitch.
Ellazar came up big against Brigham Young, though her success at the plate was not enough in the team’s afternoon loss.
She got the Terps on the board with a leadoff blast in the third and hit an RBI double in the fourth. Over the two games she went 4-for-6 with a home run, double and three RBIs.
Pitcher Brenna Nation, who failed to pitch past the first inning twice last weekend, rebounded somewhat. She lasted 4.1 innings and gave up four runs to keep the Terps close.
With the Terps down 4-3 in the fourth, infielder Corey Schwartz ripped a two-out RBI single to tie the game.
The score was knotted at four until the seventh.
In the final frame, pitcher Madison Martin, the Terps’ leader in ERA, allowed two runs (one unearned) before Dewey came in and surrendered another unearned run. The offense failed to respond in the bottom of the frame, resulting in their second loss of the day.
