The Terrapins softball team fell behind early and failed to capitalize on its offensive opportunities in a 5-4 Friday loss to Georgetown on Friday.
Pitcher Brenna Nation could not make it out of the first inning for the second time in two weeks. She walked the first three batters of the game and allowed three runs before pitcher Madison Martin came in and escaped further damage.
Martin, who entered the contest with a team-leading 1.73 ERA, pitched 4.2 relief innings and surrendered only one earned run.
The Terps, playing without home-run leader Lindsey Schmeiser, chipped away at the 3-0 deficit with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning from infielder Emily Libero. They wasted a chance to score additional runs, however, when outfielder Destiney Henderson flied out with runners on second and third to end the inning.
In the fifth, the Terps scored once despite putting runners on second and third again. Utility player Hannah Dewey’s sacrifice fly made the score 3-2.
After an error to start to bottom of the fifth, Martin gave up a two-run home run to Georgetown infielder Samantha Giovanniello to extend the Hoyas lead to 5-2.
The Terps squandered one final opportunity in the seventh. Infielder Skylynne Ellazar and outfielder Kylie Datil led off the inning with singles. Ellazar scored on a Dewey RBI ground out and Datil came home on a single from infielder Corey Schwartz.
But down one with runners on first and second and only one out, the Terps were unable to tie the score. Infielder Sarah Lang flied out and Libero lined out to end the game.
The Terps (5-11) face Monmouth and George Washington tomorrow in a double header.
