Akon has re-emerged on the music scene, Rihanna finally made ANTI available on a platform other than Tidal and Kanye West’s Waves is almost here. It’s a good moment in the music industry right now. In honor of these times, here is this week’s playlist to keep the positive vibes thriving.
1) “New Love” by Dua Lipa
With the same management team as Lana Del Rey at Warner Bros. Records, it makes sense that this 20-year-old English-Albanian singer-songwriter’s popularity shot up practically overnight with just two singles, this one and another called “Be The One.” Her debut album is due sometime in 2016, with a tour to follow.
2) “U Make Me Feel Good” by Astronomyy
This English singer-songwriter has a rather blank Internet presence, almost exclusively referring to himself as a “songsmith” and promising music to represent the idea of “space guitar.” He’s recently climbed his way to the limelight with a killer remix of Billie Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes.” This track from his EP When I’m With U has a lethal bass drop that both chills and invigorates.
3) “Sometimes” by Lais
This “Fresh out of Toronto” artist posted his first-ever project, Session One, on a subreddit called Hip-Hop Heads. He quickly became known for a moody, dark and generally sad sound within the first few days of the project’s posting. Now, his tracks on Soundcloud reach hundreds of thousands of plays, with some music blogs placing him in the same talent pool as PARTYNEXTDOOR and The Weeknd.
4) “Broken Record” by SoySauce feat. Joni Fatora
SoySauce is a Washington-based producer with a rapidly growing Soundcloud audience. The child of a sailor, Joni Fatora grew up traveling by boat frequently, inspiring her five-track EP Navigator. Both artists are flourishing on the underground music scene, so keep an eye on these two.
5) “Messed Up” Louis Mattrs feat. LK Faith
This track is the least-played but most deserving work from Brighton, England, singer-songwriter, Louis Mattrs. Mattrs first received acclaim with his feature on SG Lewis’s “No Less” last year. This song features haunting vocals from LK Faith, a London-bred singer and composer whose features on popular house tracks are garnering her fame.
6) “Baby Boy” by Lincoln Jesser feat. Yuna
Los Angeles producer Lincoln Jesser calls his music indie pop, but it feels more intricate than that. This track features Yuna, a Malaysian beauty with pipes to match. Music isn’t her only talent, though; Yuna has also attended law school and opened a successful clothing boutique, IAMJETFUEL. This, just like all of her songs, was recorded in Los Angeles, and is well worth a listen.
7) “LA Confidential” by Tory Lanez
Tory Lanez found his way onto playlists with “Say It” last year. Since then, he’s been dropping single after single, but with no new album to show for it. This track is his newest, a song very much in the style of the 23-year-old Canadian recording artist.
8) “River” by Bishop
This London-born and Los Angeles-based poet and musician is so new to the music scene that it’s difficult to even say who she is. She is extremely interactive with her small fan base on Twitter and refers to herself as a “daily choker wearer” on Instagram. Once again, someone definitely worth keeping an eye on in the coming year.
9) “Wave(s)” by Lewis Del Mar
Originally from Washington, D.C., but most recently tucked away in the town of Rockaway Beach, New York, this experimental folk-pop duo emerged on the music scene just a few weeks ago with their entrancing and gritty debut EP, simply titled EP. Written in a two-room bungalow, EP is the product of three years of traveling and sleeping on floors and one surfing excursion with the members of MGMT.
10) “Never Be Like You” by Flume feat. Kai
In the run-up to his next album, Flume has been dropping killer single after killer single, just obliterating the play count on Soundcloud and Spotify. The Autralian electronic music producer has only been putting out commercial work since 2012 but is respected beyond his years in his genre. His new album, Skin, is set for release early this year.
11) “Tried Love” by A-L-X
Fairly new to music, there is very little publicly known about A-L-X other than his London roots. With a solid set of pipes, this man, whoever he may be, is going to be something big this year.
12) “Odd Future” by JAHKOY
After going through a series of names changes, this Toronto-born artist ended up settling on his birth name, Jahkoy. He moved to Los Angeles recently to be more geographically available for collaborative work. After working recently at a Grammy Camp with artists who had received Grammy nominations and awards, he is fully equipped to make more songs as beautiful as this one.
As always, I’ll be back next week to help you start off your week the best way possible.
