It’s been a grueling stretch for the Terrapins men’s basketball team, as Saturday was the team’s fourth games in 10 days and second in that period against a top-25 team.
The Terps seemed worn out. The three previous games had gone down to the wire, with coach Mark Turgeon’s team winning each contest by six points or less.
So with the No. 4 Terps locked in a tight contest against No. 18 Purdue at Xfinity Center on Saturday afternoon, they leaned on the boisterous crowd, the 11th sellout of the season. With the Terps down 51-47 with about six minutes left, they seized control of the game with a 16-2 run. During that nearly five-minute stretch, the Terps faithful yelled and jumped and the Xfinity Center turned into a cacophony of deafening noise. Minutes later, the Terps walked off the court with a 72-61 win.
“We’re a tired basketball team,” Turgeon said. “There is no way we could have won this basketball games without our fans. Our fans were terrific. Being down four and finishing the game the way we did.”
The tough four-game stretch started Jan. 28 with the Terps’ best win of the season, a 74-68 victory over No. 5 Iowa in front of a raucous crowd. Days earlier the Hawkeyes’ leading scorer, Jarrod Uthoff, had said Xfinity Center presented no challenges. The Terps then picked up two road victories, over Ohio State and Nebraska, in the span of four days.
“It’s been a grind,” Turgeon said. “I don’t know if anyone has had the four-game stretch that we’ve had.”
One starter came into Saturday refreshed, though. Forward Robert Carter Jr. played a season-low 16 minutes against Nebraska on Wednesday due to foul trouble.
“I played two games in seven days,” said Carter, who joked he had a court-side seat for the win over the Cornhuskers.
With the grueling stretch complete, the Terps return to the court Tuesday against Division II Bowie State. After that, matchups against Michigan and Purdue loom in the coming weeks.
The Terps might be tired, but there’s no time to rest.
“It’s been a good stretch,” Carter said. “We’ll be ready to play against Bowie State.”
