The Mongolian Grill in the South Campus Dining Hall has temporarily closed after the snow from Winter Storm Jonas damaged the roof above the grill, said Bart Hipple, a Dining Services spokesman.
The snow caused a leak in the roof that needs to be repaired, but the subroof is still soaked and moisture is still present in the area, Hipple said.
The popular stir-fry station will reopen after the subroof is dry and has been inspected, he said.
“I’m annoyed,” said Heather O’Connell, a sophomore government and politics major. “I only came here for it. I usually don’t come to the [South Campus] diner.”
The Mongolian Grill is a feature unique to South Campus Dining Hall. Students select vegetables, herbs and protein, and Dining Services employees cook the food on large grills.
Students looking for an alternative while Mongolian Grill is closed can head to the Sprouts station in the North Campus Dining Hall. The staff at Sprouts will stir-fry any vegetables from the salad bar.
Freshman Lindsey Strauss, who is enrolled in letters and sciences, had not realized Mongolian Grill had closed.
“I usually eat at North Campus,” she said, “so this doesn’t impact me.”
While Mongolian Grill is closed, Dining Services staff is cleaning the counters and shelves, and preparing the grills for service when the station reopens, Hipple said.
However, the rain on Wednesday made it difficult to monitor the subroof and the status of the roof repair.
“We will continue to monitor the drying, but it looks like opening on Monday is the best possible outcome,” Hipple wrote in an email.
