Well, I don’t think anyone saw that coming.

Just 15 days since the Terrapins men’s basketball team embarrassed Ohio State with a 100-65 waxing, the Buckeyes were on the verge of pulling off a stunning upset Sunday at Value City Arena.

With 6:04 remaining, Ohio State, who entered the game with a 14-8 record, had just taken a 51-50 lead. Then on the next possession, guard Melo Trimble, the face of the No. 8 Terps, missed yet another 3-pointer.

Uh-Oh.

Coach Mark Turgeon’s team regained the lead on the following possession with a couple of free throws from Trimble, but it was never quite able to pull away. The Terps could only breath a sigh of relief once the final whistle blew to secure their 66-61 win.

This was not the Terps’ finest hour. Perhaps they underestimated the Buckeyes. Perhaps their win over No. 3 Iowa three days earlier had sapped some of their emotional and physical energy.

But the facts are that the Terps turned the ball over 13 times, allowed 13 offensive rebounds and shot 25 percent from long range. Yes, it’s never easy to win on the road in college basketball, but the Terps let Ohio State get much closer than it belonged.

With that in mind, here are the postgame grades:

Guard Melo Trimble: A-

Despite shooting an ugly 2-for-10 from deep, Trimble led all scorers with 20 points. He did a good job of getting into the paint for layups, and he also added four assists and four rebounds.

Guard Rasheed Sulaimon: C

Sulaimon was held scoreless until he hit a pair of free throws with 6:27 to go, but he nailed a 3-pointer with about three minutes later to give the Terps a 57-53 lead. Plus, a couple of his five assists were highlight-reel worthy. It’s interesting how in some games Sulaimon’s ability as a scorer sometimes becomes an afterthought, as he only took three shots Sunday.

Forward Jake Layman: A-

The senior had a monster first half, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds. He was a bit quieter in the second but still finished with 16 points on just seven shots. Layman also brought down 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Forward Robert Carter Jr.: B+

Fresh off a 17-point outing against Iowa, Carter showed off his top-notch post skills by scoring the Terps’ first six points, but wasn’t much of an offensive threat after that. He picked up four fouls but was still able to finish with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Center Diamond Stone: B-

Stone made his second straight start after coming off the bench for much of the season, and it appears he’ll be a staple in the lineup going forward. He didn’t shoot well — he was 3-for-11 — and had couple of turnovers. At one point, he punched the stanchion in frustration. The freshman contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Forward Damonte Dodd: B-

Dodd scored just two points off the bench in 21 minutes, but he was in for energy more so than his offensive potential. To that end he played well, blocking three shots and bringing down six rebounds.
