Former Terrapins football coach Randy Edsall has found a new home with the Detroit Lions.
Edsall, who was fired on Oct. 11, will serve as the Lions’ director of football research and special projects, the Lions announced Sunday. Edsall’s boss, general manager Bob Quinn, was a graduate assistant at UConn in Edsall’s first year at the school, 1999.
Edsall complied a 22-34 record in four-plus seasons with the Terps and was fired after a 2-4 start this past year, which included three consecutive losses by 21 points or more. A day before Edsall was fired, the Terps lost 49-28 to then-No. 1 Ohio State and Edsall stormed out of the postgame press conference.
Under interim coach Mike Locksley, the Terps finished the season 3-9. Michigan defensive coordinator DJ Durkin was hired on Dec. 2, and he’s assembled a staff with three former head coaches.
While Edsall was a head coach at two different colleges, he’s worked in the NFL before. He was a defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1994-1997.
Edsall’s exact role with the Lions is still unclear. But the Lions’ research department helps with game preparation and advises the coaching and personnel staff on decisions in the draft and free agency, according to the team’s website.
