University Police responded to reports of theft, a stolen motor vehicle and vandalism, among other incidents in the past week, according to police reports.

Theft

On Jan. 25 at 10:30 p.m., a convenience store employee flagged down an officer in the 4400 block of Knox Road after an individual took several food items from the store, according to reports.

The same perpetrator had also taken an apparel item from another convenience store in the 7300 block of Route 1. Police located the thief near Knox Road and made an arrest shortly after the crimes took place. He was charged for theft of less than $100 and released that same night.

All items were returned to their respective stores, according to the report.

Stolen motor vehicle

Police were notified of a motor vehicle stolen from Lot Y at 9 p.m. on Monday. The incident is still under investigation.

Vandalism

On Jan. 21 at 8:20 p.m., an officer responded to Lot 15 for a report of vandalism. A woman reported that her right windshield wiper was bent between Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 21 at 7 a.m. Police were again called Tuesday at 12:40 p.m. for a dent over the right front wheel of the car.

Police are reviewing footage from the parking lot.

Police were also notified of a report of vandalism at Ellicott Hall on Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. This incident is now closed.

Damage to state property

On Jan. 20 and Monday, University Police were called in response to three different fire alarms which occurred at the University Health Center, 10 Fraternity Row and Tawes Hall. According to the report, officials determined that water leakage, caused by burst water pipes, triggered the alarms. Fire officials and Facilities Management were consulted in each instance.

“When it gets really cold, pipes begin to freeze and sometimes burst,” police spokeswoman Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas said. “Depending where they’re at, they can cause a lot of damage — so we’re always ready to respond.”
