As the University of Maryland weathered Winter Storm Jonas, students spent their snow days and spring move-in a few different ways. The Diamondback sent reporters around the thawing campus Tuesday to find out what they were up to.
Take a look at how some students spent their days off:
About 11:45 a.m. outside of Commons Shop
“Some of my professors, they put out some things on ELMS already, so I’ve been catching up on work I guess that was supposed to be due today. … That’s pretty much it, though — a little bit of Netflix, but a lot of sleeping, though, honestly.”
— Giselle Miranda, sophomore government and politics major
12:30 p.m. on the Washington Quad
“I tried to build [a fort], but it didn’t really work. I don’t know how people do those big fancy ones with the tunnels and everything. … I mostly just slept and watched Netflix.”
— Hannah McGee, freshman enrolled in letters and sciences
About 2 p.m. in the Denton Community
“I went to the snowball fight with my floor and then we all had a movie marathon with hot chocolate.”
— Emma Horsey, freshman criminology and criminal justice major
3 p.m. at the South Campus Dining Hall
“I spent some time sledding but the rest of my time studying for my upcoming classes.”
— Peter Walderhaug, senior mathematics and secondary education major
About 3 p.m. on South Campus
“These past few days I’ve honestly been using to get adjusted to this time zone. I was in Nepal for all of winter break, which is 11 hours and 15 minutes ahead of here, so I basically have been sleeping at odd hours during the day and staying up during the night. … It was too cold and snowy outside for me. I admired Jonas from the comfort of my warm apartment.”
— Weronika Nepali, senior biochemistry major
3:30 p.m. outside of Stamp Student Union
“I also spent a lot of time cooking — trying to keep away from the diner food as long as possible. I want to savor that last bit of real food as long as I can.”
— Laila Abujuma, freshman cell biology and genetics major
About 4 p.m. outside of Eppley Recreation Center
“The past two days I’ve been reading and watching a lot of Netflix. … I went to my friends’ house and they made me grilled cheese and tomato soup, which was nice. And then we played in the snow for a bit and they buried me, and then I buried them in retaliation.”
— Kayla Steinberg, junior government and politics major
