The Terrapins men’s lacrosse team set a Major League Lacrosse record Friday afternoon when six of the program’s players were drafted in the first 19 picks. It’s also the most Terps ever selected.
Defender Matt Dunn, selected seventh overall by the Rochester Rattlers, was the Terps’ lone first-round selection. Dunn, an Inside Lacrosse 2016 Preseason Third Team All American, collected 13 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers as part of the Terps’ top-ranked defense last season.
Dunn’s selection marked the third consecutive year a Terp was selected in the first round after defender Michael Ehrhardt went seventh overall in 2014 and longstick midfielder Jesse Bernhardt went fourth overall in 2013.
Goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr, the 11th overall pick for the Ohio Machine, was the first of four Terps selected in the second round. The Machine’s stadium is about two hours from Bernlohr’s Akron, Ohio, hometown.
After winning the 2015 Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award as the nation’s most outstanding goalkeeper in his first year starting for the Terps, Bernlohr was the first netminder taken Friday. No other goalie was selected until the fourth round.
Bernlohr’s selection started a streak of three straight Terps picks. Midfielder Henry West went to the Florida Launch with the 12th pick, and midfielder Pat Young, a transfer from UMBC, went 13th to the Charlotte Hounds.
Bryan Cole, the third Terps midfielder chosen, joined Bernlohr with the Ohio Machine when the franchise took the Inside Lacrosse 2016 Preseason Third Team All America with the 16th pick.
Defender Greg Danseglio, who redshirted in 2015 after transferring to the Terps from Virginia, finished the Terps’ historic run when the Atlanta Blaze took him at the top of the third round (19th overall).
All six players are expected to take the field for the Terps this season as the program looks to build on its national championship appearance before suiting up for their professional teams.
