Terrapins women’s basketball guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and center Brionna Jones were two of 20 players named to the Wooden Award midseason list released Friday.
About 250 sportswriters and sportscasters vote to determine the winner of the award, given annually to the most outstanding player in women’s college basketball. No Terps player has won the award since its inception in 2004.
Walker-Kimbrough, the team’s leading scorer at 17.6 points per game, leads the Big Ten in three-point shooting percentage (57.1). The junior sharpshooter made two of her four shots from behind the arc and scored 15 points in the Terps’ seven-point road win Thursday against Michigan.
Jones, meanwhile, has been a consistent scoring presence inside. She holds the country’s second-best shooting percentage (68.6) while averaging 14.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest for the No. 8 Terps (15-2, 4-1 Big Ten).
Against No. 1 UConn at Madison Square Garden, the 6-foot-3 junior poured in a game-high 24 points on 12-for-14 shooting against the frontcourt of forwards Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck, both of whom also made the list.
The Huskies featured three players on the list — guard Moriah Jefferson also made the cut — while the Terps, South Carolina and Ohio State each had two players. The Big Ten was the leading conference with seven selections.
The award, which Stewart won last season, will be handed out after the Final Four in April.
