Terrapins baseball right-hander Mike Shawaryn was named a preseason first-team Perfect Game USA All-American, the organization announced Monday.
The junior broke single-season school records in wins (13) and strikeouts (138) last season. The Carneys Point, New Jersey, native led all first-team honorees in those categories, while just one pitcher, a reliever, held a better ERA than Shawaryn’s 1.71 mark in the 2015 campaign.
The Terps ace held batters to a .202 average last season in 116 innings pitched, a better mark than any regular starter who was honored. He pitched 53.2 more innings than the second most in the category for the Terps, left-hander Robert Galligan.
Shawaryn’s 24 career wins are the most in program history, and he helped lead the Terps to the NCAA Super Regional the past two seasons, the only two times in school history. Last summer, Shawaryn became the second Terp to ever compete for the U.S. Collegiate National Baseball team.
No other Big Ten player was selected on the first team. As the Terps ace, Shawaryn will play a major role this season in helping coach John Szefc’s squad attempt to reach its first College World Series. The Terps begin their season Feb. 19 in a three-game series at Alabama.
