Terrapins football cornerback Will Likely has decided to stay with the Terps for his senior year and not declare for the NFL draft, according to a Friday press release. Likely also tweeted the news.
“First and foremost, I’m looking forward to earning my degree,” Likely said in the release. “Secondly, I want to finish off what I started with my teammates. We believe in the direction of this program and know that the future is bright.”
Likely, who finished 2015 second in the conference with 789 return yards, was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Year and earned USA Today second-team All-American returner honors.
He served as leader of the secondary last season, a duty he’ll reclaim with three starters leaving. And under coach Mike Locksley, he was a consistent part of the offense before suffering a high-ankle sprain in a Nov. 21 loss to Indiana. He didn’t play in the Terps’ season finale, a 46-41 win at Rutgers.
Likely set a Big Ten record with 233 punt return yards in the Terps’ 50-21 win over Richmond on Sept. 5. He also returned a punt for a touchdown in that game.
