The Terrapins football team has hired Arkansas State offensive coordinator Walt Bell to assume the same position, according to multiple reports. A team spokesperson declined to confirm the hiring.
Bell, a 31-year-old, served two seasons as the head of the Red Wolves’ offense and was their assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. In 2014, the team set school records with 6,194 yards total yards, 477 points scored and 65 touchdowns scored.
He’ll be tasked with turning around a Terps offense that lagged behind much of its Big Ten foes last season. The Terps averaged 24.7 points per game and tossed a nation-worst 29 interceptions. They failed to eclipse double-digit points three times.
Mike Locksley was the Terps’ offensive coordinator this past season and was the interim coach for the last six games. His fate remains unclear, but he’s been pictured with a Terps recruit and DJ Durkin.
