DJ Durkin and Athletic Director Kevin Anderson pose during Durkin’s introductory press conference at Gossett Team House on Dec. 3, 2015.

Terrapins football coach DJ Durkin signed a five-year contract for $12.5 million that will be extended to six seasons if he’s still coaching the Terps at the end of next regular season, according to a memorandum of understanding signed Thursday.

Durkin was introduced as head coach Thursday morning. The former Michigan defensive coordinator said he’ll forgo the Wolverines’ bowl game and start working for the Terps immediately.

If Durkin’s contract is extended for a sixth season, through Dec. 31, 2021, he’ll make $2.65 million in the final year of the deal. The contract is automatically extended if Durkin is still the Terps’ head coach after the 2016 regular season. That includes the Big Ten championship game if the Terps qualify.

Durkin’s base salary is $500,000 and he will earn $1.9 million in supplemental income the first season. The supplemental income increases by $50,000 each season.

There are buyouts on both sides. If Durkin is fired without cause, this university will have to pay 65 percent of his remaining guaranteed compensation. If Durkin terminates the contract in the first two years, presumably to take another job, he has to pay $2 million. He’s on the hook for $1 million during years three and four and $500,000 after the end of the fourth season.

Durkin could earn up to $625,000 per year in bonuses, including $100,000 if the Terps win a conference title and $25,000 if he’s named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. A national championship win would net Durkin an additional $250,000.

Miscellaneous items include a monthly $1,000 car stipend and an annual $1,440 cellphone stipend.

In the introductory news conference, Durkin said he would start recruiting as soon as possible. Friday, a Rivals five-star linebacker, Rahshaun Smith, posted a picture of him and Durkin on Twitter.
