That’s right, friends — Christmas is coming early this year because I’m back for the second time this week with another playlist just for you. This special Friday edition of Push Play Monday is just as full of amazing tunes as our regular Monday meetings, so grab your headphones and get ready for this week’s second batch of musical joy.
1. “Wassup” by GoldLink feat. Sango
If the beat of this song doesn’t get stuck in your head, let me know how you managed that. After releasing his second studio album, GoldLink has been all over everyone’s SoundClouds and popping up on turntables in DMV clubs he used to frequent when he lived in Washington, D.C. This song with Sango, a recording artist from Seattle who kills every track he makes, is the farthest thing from a letdown for longtime fans of GoldLink’s work.
2. “Boys Like You” by Who Is Fancy feat. Meghan Trainor and Ariana Grande
Just who is Who Is Fancy? Until April, no one knew his real name. The truth? He’s Jake Hagood, a singer-songwriter from Bentonville, a tiny town in Arkansas. The nickname “Fancy” came from his coworkers at the Forever 21 he worked at while attending Trevecca Nazarene University. He was found by producer Scooter Braun, who is also associated with Justin Bieber’s success. His identity was kept secret for the first few months of his career, only to be revealed on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Seeing as Who Is Fancy opened on tours for both Meghan Trainor and Ariana Grande, this collaborative song was entirely inevitable.
3. “Fever” by Lenno feat. Benson
This Finnish beat-maker with little American following writes this in the description of his newest SoundCloud upload: “I made Fever in London back in July. It’s a nu-disco song with cowbell, slap bass and amazing vocals from the British singer Benson. It’s been the secret weapon at a lot at my shows for the past couple of months.” Benson, along with British DJ Paul Harris, co-wrote this song sure to put you in a dancing mood.
4. “Pull Me Up” by KYKO
This 19-year-old producer was born and raised in London, where his style of music is growing ever-popular. Having just broken the surface of the industry, there is little information about him online, but for now, enjoy his debut single for what it is and wait on this man to keep climbing the music ladder.
5. “Numbers” by DiRTY RADiO
Formed in 2010, this Canadian indie-electro-R&B band consists of three members: Farshad “Shaddy” Edalat, Zachary “Waspy” Forbes and Anthony “Tonez” Dolhai. With the band currently on its Canada Winter Tour, this track comes as a new piece to add to an already hype set list.
6. “If You Leave Me Now” by Foxes
British stunner Louisa Rose Allen (Foxes) initially trained in beauty therapy at age 18 before pursuing her true passion: music. Her debut single, “Youth,” received a lot of attention back in 2010, but her real break was when she featured on Zedd’s summer 2012 pop explosion “Clarity.” Now, she is the face of the H&M Loves Music Fall 2015 Campaign with a Grammy Award and many red carpet walks under her belt. Her second studio album, All I Need, is set to drop in February with a feature by Bastille’s Dan Smith.
7. “Circles” by machineheart feat. Vanic
Machineheart is a five-member band with four songs for you to groove to. This track, which the band released as a single to hype up its debut EP, In Your Dreams, features the synth work of Vanic, a popular Canadian DJ. Chloë Grace Moretz tweeted the song when it first released, gaining machineheart a lot of attention. The band’s debut album is on its way.
8. “One of Them” by G-Eazy feat. Big Sean
G-Eazy’s newest album, When It’s Dark Out, is loaded with ideal partnerships, making for what will be some of the year’s hottest tracks. With vocals from Kehlani, Marc E. Bassy and Keyshia Cole tracing across the track listing, this album is the West Coast collaboration of your dreams. This single, leaked a day before the album was set to release, is customary of G-Eazy’s occasional rough lyricism.
9. “808” by Kalin and Myles feat. Jack & Jack
Kalin White and Myles Parrish met a house party in 2011. Within two years, they released their first EP, which had a couple of tracks that gained fame via Vine. Jack & Jack were actually some of the Viners famous for using Kalin and Myles’ music in their videos. Now that major labels signed both groups, they’re able to collaborate on a fun and light track like “808.”
10. “I Know U” by Keys N Krates
As it says on its website, Keys N Krates is the “brainchild of drummer Adam Tune, synth/keyboard aficionado David Matisse and internationally award-winning turntablist Jr. Flo.” The trio from Toronto is — much to the dismay of the members — often referred to as the world’s first trap band. Regardless of the label you choose to give it, its two EPs are jam-packed with incredibly energizing music.
I’ll be back Dec. 14 for the final Push Play Monday playlist of this semester. Have any suggestions? Tweet us @dbkdiversions.
