Clothing has been a trademark of every generation in recorded history. Fashion marks eras and leaves a stamp on time periods in which trends spread like wildfire. It is only fitting then that this column begins to encapsulate this vital aspect of our community at the University of Maryland. So welcome to the first of many biweekly editions of a campuswide trend report, Fear and Clothing in College Park, in which I will be highlighting chic ensembles, new trends and styling techniques for the fashion-hungry.

1) Sports Luxe

This fall, sports luxe or sports chic style is coming back, with a recent fluctuation of Adidas track pants paired with specialized Nikes, graphic hoodies and leather elements. Mesh paneling in uncommon places is also on the rise and is starting to be seen more in feminine silhouettes of women’s clothing.

This season, celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and singer Kehlani have been donning Topshop bomber jackets with large sunglasses, sneakers and crop tops.

Some key items to incorporating this style into your wardrobe: Pacsun joggers, an Urban Outfitters faux leather snapback and Adidas Superstar sneakers.

On the campus, these students are killing the sports luxe style.

Here, senior journalism major Shannon Clash pairs a bodycon skirt with a simple T-shirt and a leather baseball cap, creating the perfect balance of femininity with a sporty element.

Sport Luxe 2

Adam Liu, a second-year telecommunications graduate student, gives the all-black ensemble a new look with a graphic sweatshirt, athletic shorts and black Nikes. His light brown backpack is a nice touch of color.

Sport Luxe 3

For this look, sophomore computer science major Ryan Lau dons all H&M, which has been recently stepping up its game in clothing quality.

2) Autumnal palette

The autumnal palette is a warm, dark-toned range of colors, including black, brown, dark gold, navy, olive green and maroon. These pair well with white or cream as well, in the ratio of two dark colors to one light color. Incorporating these colors into your style is easy, as they are readily available in shirts, pants, shoes and accessories.

Some key pieces for expanding your autumnal palette: a maroon turtleneck (They’re back!), an olive-green bomber jacket and navy rain boots that are so chic that you can even wear them in the sunshine.

Here are some fabulous examples from around the campus:

These two lovely ladies demonstrate how colors can be dressed up or dressed down. Blossom Ojukwu (right), sophomore education and vocal performance major, shows the more feminine side of this color palette, while Rukayat Muse-Ariyoh, a junior chemical engineering major, shows how the colors can be layered.

3) Vintage layering

Speaking of layering, it is time to start investing in sweaters again. Nothing reminds you more that it’s getting colder than having to cross the campus for an 8 a.m. class, up and moving before the sun even rises. Layering is incredibly important to combat the inconsistency of this state’s weather, as you can just remove pieces as the temperature rises throughout the day.

Layering

Fei Mancho, a senior marketing major and co-founder of the fashion club MasTERPiece, Fei Mancho layers vintage pieces with Public Desire boots in the most chic way.

4) Kickin’ It Old School

Nineties hip-hop has not only been influencing music, but has also been making its way back into fashion. Streetwear is seeing more windbreakers, geometric neon patterns and baggy ripped jeans. It’s a style that never really faded, and thanks to artists like Pia Mia and countless rising choreographers like Dytto, this trend doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.

old school

With the mix of ripped jeans, white sneakers, a striped crop top and simple jewelry, freshman kinesiology major Teah Matthews combines Tommy Hilfiger vibes with old-school streetwear.

Old School 2

Patrice-Morgan Ongoly, a junior mathematics and biology major, rocks this look with major Fresh Prince of Bel Air inspiration.

5) Future Trends from Social Media

Faux septum jewelry, mock necks on shirts and chic long coats are all over Instagram these days. Easily paired with the trends above, they’re definitely worth adding to your closet.
