Quarterback Shane Cockerille drops back and prepares to pass during the Terps’ spring game on April 11, 2015 at Byrd Stadium. Cockerille, a redshirt sophomore, moved to fullback this summer.

Shane Cockerille is returning to quarterback.

The former four-star ESPN quarterback recruit moved to fullback this summer. But on the latest Terrapins football depth chart, released Monday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s game against Penn State in Baltimore, redshirt sophomore Cockerille is listed as the Terps co-backup quarterback along with Caleb Rowe.

Redshirt junior Perry Hills remains the starting quarterback with graduate transfer Daxx Garman likely dropping to fourth-string.

In the Terps last game, against No. 1 Ohio State on Oct. 10, Cockerille took his first collegiate snap at quarterback as the Terps used him in a wildcat formation. In that same game Hills rushed for 170 yards, a program record for a quarterback.

Interim coach and offensive coordinator Mike Locksley has said the Terps’ offense will build off that performance in the 49-28 loss to the Buckeyes.

A dual-threat quarterback in high school, Cockerille likely offers more mobility at the quarterback position than Rowe or Garman, both pro-style quarterbacks.

At fullback, Cockerille was second on the depth chart behind redshirt junior Kenneth Goins Jr., a high school teammate. Cockerille started one game, had no rushing attempts and one catch for seven yards.

Redshirt junior Andrew Stefanelli will back up Goins now.
