The Terps celebrate near the mound after their 2-1 win over No. 1 UCLA in the Los Angeles Regional final on June 1, 2015.

For the second time in three nights, the Terrapins baseball team beat No. 1 overall seed UCLA in the NCAA tournament. Monday night, the No. 3-seed Terps held off the Bruins, 2-1, at Jackie Robinson Stadium to claim the Los Angeles Regional title and advance to their second straight Super Regionals.

The Terps will meet No. 3-seed Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. The two teams met in the same round last season, with the Cavaliers beating the Terps in a three-game set to advance to the College World Series.

As it has during the regional, the Terps struggled to string together hits. Catcher Kevin Martir led the team with a 3-for-3 performance, but the rest of the Terps combined for five hits.

Instead, it was a freshman’s performance on the hill that propelled the Terps past the Bruins. Right-hander Taylor Bloom, making his fifth start of the season, dominated UCLA over six innings. Despite entering the game with a 4.55 ERA in 27.2 innings, Bloom allowed one run on one hit to notch his second-career win.

Despite the Terps making three errors in the contest, he benefitted from another stellar defensive play by center fielder LaMonte Wade. In the third inning, the junior gunned down UCLA catcher Darrell Miller Jr. at the plate to keep the game scoreless.

An inning later, the Terps broke through against Bruins starter Grant Dyer. Martir drew a four-pitch walk, and right fielder Anthony Papio followed two batters later with a two-out RBI double off the right-center field wall.

While the Bruins turned to their ace, James Kaprielian, starting in in the fifth inning — he entered the game 10-4 with a 1.98 ERA in 104.2 innings — they still managed to extend their lead.

After second baseman Brandon Lowe walked, Martir poked a single through the ride side, putting runners on the corners with one out in the sixth. And after designated hitter Nick Cieri fell behind 0-2, he fouled off a few pitches before driving home Lowe with an RBI ground out.

Bloom started the seventh frame with a leadoff walk, his first of the night, prompting coach John Szefc to insert right-handed closer Kevin Mooney. Even so, the Terps’ all-time saves leader couldn’t keep the Bruins from plating their first run.

With runners on first and second and one out, Mooney allowed a single that pulled UCLA within a run. The base knock came moments after Lowe’s second error of the game at second base. Despite Lowe’s miscue, Mooney struck out the next two hitters to keep the Terps in front.

In the ninth inning, Mooney retired to the first two Bruins to pull the Terps within one out of the Super Regionals. Mooney walked the next batter, though, and allowed a single to put the tying run 90 feet away.

But using a slew of breaking balls, Mooney finally froze Miller for the strikeout sending the Terps into a dogpile near the mound. After making their first-ever Super Regionals appearance last season, the Terps will return with a chance to make the College World Series.
