It’s this university’s first official snow day of the semester, and people across the campus have been preparing for it since Monday.

Here’s a look at how some are spending the day:

2:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Hall

“Whenever there’s snowstorm, I always like to go out in the middle of the night. It’s just quiet and fresh, it’s just awesome.”

—Daniel Varakh, senior biology major

11:22 a.m. along Route 1

“Today, I’ll maybe get some homework done, maybe go out, maybe go to the snowball fight. It’s very all up in the air. This is most definitely better than school. Today’s my long day; I have four classes.”
—Rebecca Brown, a sophomore biology major

12:15 p.m. near Cumberland Hall

“I’m watching Netflix and eating in. I’m actually kind of sick so I’m staying in bed, and drinking tea.”
—Kelly Khare, a freshman chemical engineering major

12:20 p.m. outside the North Campus Dining Hall

“I’m studying today for my bio exam at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. I’m really hoping for a delay tomorrow, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

—Taylor Aguiar, a freshman biochemistry major

“I’m just going to my sister’s dorm to hang out with friends … not really doing much studying.”
—Cristina Johnson, a freshman journalism major

12:30 p.m. at Bagel Place

“First I’m going to get in touch with my teacher because we have an essay due on ELMS, and I don’t know if it’s still due today, so I need to figure that out. If it is, I’ll finish the essay, it’s not that hard. I want to hang out with friends also, play Halo and Destiny.”

—Greg Baroni, a senior aerospace major

12:30 p.m. at Denny’s

“I decided to come to Denny’s because there are a few better ways to start off a snow day than coffee and some breakfast food.”

—Matt Bower, sophomore kinesiology major

12:45 p.m. at Hair Cuttery

“I’m waiting for my boyfriend to get his haircut. Then we’re going to Shoppers because I have coupons and the roads aren’t too bad. Then I’m studying for an anatomy test that I have on Thursday, then I’ll probably watch a movie.”
—Sarah Lebovitz, a junior biology and psychology major

1:30 p.m. outside North Campus Dining Hall

“We’re going to have a pancake dinner and play board games and pool and what not.”

—Shaina Glasgow, a sophomore psychology major, who said she plans to attend a Mardi Gras party at the Catholic Student Center.

2 p.m. in Oakland Hall

“I know there’s a snowball fight going on at McKeldin, but I’m not sure if I’m going to make it to that. … I have a lot of work that was supposed to be due today that I didn’t finish, so I have to do it for tomorrow.”

—Erin Verni, sophomore mechanical engineering major

2 p.m. outside Fraternity Row

“We decided to go out and brave the snow and cold at some ‘snowcials.'”

—Katie Laird, sophomore community health major

2:30 p.m. on McKeldin Mall

“I heard word of a battle that was to take place on McKeldin Mall and I thought this would be a ripe opportunity for me to attempt to carve out a piece of this here land for my kingdom. I acquired a few followers but most of them have dispersed. It seems that the vast majority of the peasantry here is opposed to the idea of any monarchy whatsoever.”

—Oliver Owens, a sophomore sociology major

3 p.m. outside Eppley Recreation Center

“I’ve lived in Maryland all my life and I always go sledding when it snows. Especially on days when I have off school. … Mostly we’ve just been hanging out, not doing to much homework or anything yet, just enjoying the day off.”

—Brent McGuire, freshman economics major, on his way to go sledding.

3:30 p.m. in the North Campus Dining Hall

“I was so excited when I found out [about the snow day]. I was praying for it. … I got to sleep in, get some reading done and catch up on some work. I slept in till around 11:30. … I heard about the snowball fight, but I just couldn’t make it out past the comfort of my room.”

—Ashley Heard, senior music education major

4:07 p.m. outside Prince Frederick’s Hall

“I’m trying to as a senior to just live it up on the last snow day of my life. We went to the snow ball fight today. … We went sledding last night right outside of Dorchester. We took a big cardboard box and just went sledding.”

—Charlotte Mccafferty, a senior family science major

After leaving the campus-wide snowball fight on McKeldin Mall, sophomore civil engineering major Shai Berkowitz and his friends played football in the snow outside of Prince Fredrick’s Hall.

“It’s fun to play in the snow and I like the cold,” said Berkowitz, who, after the snowball fight and football game, had stripped down to just a Captain America t-shirt. “We should have another day like this tomorrow.”

4:20 p.m. at the South Campus Dining Hall

“There were some crazy people [at the snowball fight], people wore masks there were some shirtless people, someone doing fire tricks and it was hilarious. … It was cool because everyone was here and everyone had fun.”

—Shelby Pittman, freshman criminology and criminal justice and psychology major

“We went to the mall to do the snowball fight. We heard there’d be over 3,000 people and it was fun. There definitely wasn’t that many people but maybe 1,000 or less at the peak time. We threw snowballs at people, and at one point, a guy had a flag in his hand and we ended up charging behind him, yelling, ‘Charge!'”

—Kaitlyn Haller, a freshman hearing and speech sciences major

5 p.m. outside the South Campus Dining Hall

“I went to my sorority house and we just hung out there. We drank hot chocolate and we watched a movie. Now I’m going to do some homework.  You can’t forget about that.”

—Freshman economics major Mattie Roesler
