Freshman Kristina Hovsepyan became the first freshman to compete at the No. 1 singles spot for the Terps in 14 years.

The Terrapins tennis defeated No. 70 N.C. State, 4-3, in Sunday’s regular-season finale.

The Terps (9-12, 4-10 ACC) jumped to an early 1-0 lead over N.C. State (8-13, 2-12) after taking the doubles point.

The point came down to the last remaining doubles match. Freshman Kristina Hovsepyan and sophomore Olga Gaistruk would prevail, however, after the match went to a seven-point tiebreaker.

In singles, four of the matches went to three sets. The Terps, however, would prevail in all but one of those contests to claim the win and keep the Wolfpack winless on the road this season.

The team’s next match will be Thursday at the start of ACC tournament play in Cary, N.C.
