It is the second week of school and assignments are already piling up. The reality of your workload is setting in. How are you going to deal with a growing number of assignments that are sure to be accompanied by stress? For me, it starts with establishing comfort. Walking into a dorm room that resembles a jail cell and is filled with overpriced textbooks will only add to that stress. So why not make your dorm feel more like home?

When you step into your room, you should exhale and give a sigh of relief as you plop onto your bed. Not simply because your work day is over but because you have finally made it to a place that is openhearted, serene and cozy. There are a many ways to achieve this sensation. For example, after months of planning a perfect dorm room look with my roommate, we discovered creative ideas online that worked together to make our room so much more than just a place to lay our heads.

Lighting is key:

From paper lanterns and Christmas lights to floor and desk lamps, the lighting that you choose for your room can vastly affect the mood.

Carpets are cozy:

I was surprised by the huge difference between carpet and tile. For one, carpet does not give me chills the moment my feet touch the floor. More importantly, carpet creates a look that mirrors a sensational home-like feeling.

Get rid of the big white, cinder block walls:

Instead, line your walls with things that you adore. Decorating your walls is an opportunity to allow your creativity to run wild. Print out pictures of your friends and family and hang them on your wall, go shopping for wall décor at your local Target and take advantage of the poster sale at the Stamp Student Union.

Storage units:

Storage units are one of the most important but overlooked aspects of dorm life. Do not just go for any storage unit you see. Instead, try to find storage that fits the theme of your room and also stores your miscellaneous items.

Food:

What better way to make your dorm your home away from home than filling it with your favorite snacks? That box of Fruit Roll-Ups may be just what you need at 1 a.m. when you are trying to finish your English 101 paper.

From wall decals to lighting and carpet, there are many ways you can spice up your dorm room. It is, after all, your home for almost a year; why not make it a place that you love to be?
