The Terrapins field hockey team exhibited a high-powered offense to open the season in its 8-4 win against New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia at Temple’s Conference Cup. Forward Jill Witmer led the team with a pair of goals, while forward Mieke Hayn notched a goal and two assists off the bench in her first game with the Terps.
The team opened the scoring in a little over six minutes, as midfielder Maxine Fluharty found the net off a rebounded shot from Witmer. Hayn doubled the lead five minutes later. Defender Megan Bozek pulled one back for the Wildcats off a penalty stroke, but the Terps (1-0) pulled away with a four-goal flurry in four minutes.
Witmer guided in a cross from midfielder Anna Dessoye in the 26th minute to make it 3-1, and forward Katie Gerzabek scored before Witmer and Dessoye added two more, making it 6-1. New Hampshire (0-1) scored before the end of the first period to break the Terps’ scoring run.
The Terps got on the board early in the second period as well through forward Alyssa Parker, but Wildcats midfielder Kellie Joyce responded almost instantly after the restart off a breakaway. New Hampshire then cut the score to 7-4 with a late goal, but Terps defender Hayley Turner scored off a last-minute penalty corner to seal the 8-4 victory.
The Terps will conclude their weekend Sunday afternoon, where they will play the winner of the Temple-Ohio State game.
