For everyone who celebrated Cinco de McKeldin instead of Cinco de Mayo, there’s still cheap, delicious Mexican food to be found. Here are some of the best Mexican places in D.C. and, no, Chipotle didn’t make the cut. These three authentic eateries bring something different to the table, and they won’t break your budget.

Alero Mexican Restaurant

Alero is the place to go for big portions and small prices. Appetizers are about $6 and entrees average $13, leaving enough money leftover to sample the wide selection of tequila available — if you’re older than 21. You can even buy margaritas by the pitcher if your group is feeling up to it.

For the easiest Metro access, head to the U Street location. Take the 104 Metro bus from Stamp to the College Park Metro Station and board the Green Line train toward Branch Ave. The ride to the U Street station takes about 20 minutes and costs $2.75 during off-peak hours.

Guapo’s

For the best atmosphere and cheesy Mexican decor, head to the Guapo’s in Tenleytown. Sit on the outdoor deck, and enjoy the spring weather while taking in the sights of this D.C. neighborhood located near American University. I’ve heard the fajitas are the highlight of the menu, which ranges from traditional favorites to original recipes.

Taking the Metro here is much easier than driving. Just get on a Green Line train toward Branch Ave and transfer to the Red Line at Gallery Place-Chinatown. The ride to Tenleytown costs $3.50 one-way during off-peak hours and takes about 35 minutes.

Casa Oaxaca

Casa Oaxaca, my priciest pick, is the best for those looking to experience truly Mexican cuisine. The dinner-only menu includes several dishes you’ve never heard of as well as the usual marinated steak and carnitas. They also have a good selection of traditional desserts; I can’t pass up churros and Casa Oaxaca’s sound especially good.

Casa Oaxaca is close to the Woodley Park Metro Station on the Red Line so, after boarding a Green Line train, you’ll need to transfer at Gallery Place. The one-way fare is $3.30 and the trip is about a half hour.
