Former Xavier forward Dez Wells is transferring to the Terps men’s basketball team.

Former Xavier forward Dez Wells, an Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection last season, announced today via Twitter he is transferring to this university.

The sophomore was charged with sexual assault last month after being expelled Aug. 3 for violating Xavier’s code of student conduct. But a Hamilton County (Ohio) court dropped the charges last week after they concluded there was insufficient evidence to indict Wells.

“I’m thankful God has blessed me with a second opportunity to continue my education,” Wells wrote in a Twitter picture. “I would like to thank UK, UM, UMD and UO for their recruitment & interest in me as a student athlete. After careful consideration with my family, I’ve decided to attend the University of Maryland.”

Wells, who was the Musketeers’ fourth-leading scorer last season at 9.8 points per game, could play this season if his waiver is approved. He is the third transfer to join coach Mark Turgeon’s program since April, following former Albany guard Logan Aronhalt and former Michigan forward Evan Smotrycz.
