It took 110 minutes, but the Terrapins women’s soccer team held off Villanova in a scoreless draw Sunday.

The No. 13 Terps (1-0-1) outshot the Wildcats (1-0-1), 20-12, before an announced crowd of 467 at the Villanova Soccer Complex, dominating play with a 13-5 corner kicks advantage.

Still, coach Jonathan Morgan was frustrated with the 0-0 final outcome.

“I’m disappointed,” the first-year coach said. “When you’re the team that was dominated, you’re excited with a tie. But if you were the better team, it’s a sour taste. We had more than enough opportunities to win this game and we let it slip away a little bit.”

But that was not without some scrap. Wildcats defenders Taylor Houck and Kendra Jones each earned yellow cards, and there were 24 total fouls in the game.

The Terps had an opportunity to score in the 106th minute when midfielder Olivia Wagner took a corner kick. Defender Sarah Molina’s ensuing shot attempt went wide right of the net, keeping the game scoreless.

The Terps’ last scoring chance came when midfielder Ashley Spivey fired a shot toward Wildcats goalkeeper Kelsey Quinn in the 108th minute that sailed over the net.

“It was definitely a little frustrating that I mishit it,” said Spivey, who was playing in just her second collegiate game. “I was a little nervous being a freshman and all.”

Spivey had a team-high five shots (one on goal) and played all 110 minutes.

“I’m not going to be able to walk for a few days,” she said. “I had never played a full game, much less a college match at such a high intensity level.”

Terps goalkeeper Shannon Zickler made her first collegiate start Sunday, filling in for teammate Rachelle Beanlands, who was attending her brother’s wedding. Zickler recorded two saves in the first half, adding two more in the first overtime.

“There was a lot of pressure on us, but the defense came up [with] key plays,” said Zickler, who also earned her first career shutout. “It was definitely a hard fought battle the whole time.”

The Terps have a week off to recover before playing Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, on Aug. 26.

“Right now, I like our team a lot and today we did a lot of positive things, but we just didn’t put together the final piece,” Morgan said. “This week we’ll emphasize putting it all together.”
