Coming off its most recent live release, Guster graces the Sonar stage in Baltimore Sunday night. The Boston acoustic-rockers will perform downtown starting at 7 p.m.
The band got its start when its members – Ryan Miller (guitar and vocals), Adam Gardner (guitar and vocals) and Brian Rosenworcel (percussion) – met as freshmen at Tufts University in 1992. They came together to form one of the most lauded indie rock bands of the ’90s. The band’s first album, Parachute, was named by the Boston Globe as the Best Local Debut Album for 1995. Followed up in 1997 by another 40,000 plus-sold album, Goldfly, Guster quickly became one of the Boston area’s biggest acts. This became even more apparent later that year when the band was named the Best Live Act at the Boston Music Awards.
The following year, Guster finally signed with a major label, Sire Records Group and Hybrid Recordings, and re-released Goldfly to catch national attention, especially with the college crowd. Guster then returned to the studio for its third album, Lost and Gone Forever. After shopping for another label, the band landed a deal with Reprise’s Palm Pictures, and their fourth effort, Keep it Together, appeared on shelves in June 2003.
Guster on Ice, the band’s most recent release, is a live album recorded on tour in Portland, Maine in May 2004. The disc’s standout tracks include “FaFa” and “Careful,” and the album is a great representation of the band’s live energy.
Guster performs live at Sonar Sunday; the doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for general admission. For more information call (410) 327-8333.
