One day after the Terrapins baseball team failed to produce hits in key situations, the offense came alive, and the Terps got another solid outing from a starter in a 9-7 win at No. 23 Florida on Saturday.
After the Terps had three hits in the season opener, they responded with 13 hits, including two solo home runs, against Gators right-hander Brett Morales.
Morales, a freshman, didn’t last four innings and gave up five hits, two walks and five earned runs.
On the other side, right-hander Mike Shawaryn, making his collegiate debut, threw 5.2 innings of one-run ball and picked up the win. Right-hander Kevin Mooney got the save. He was charged with one run but got the last out of the eighth and then pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Gators scored all seven of their runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The Terps had a much more balanced offensive output, scoring at least one run in seven innings. Seven of the Terps nine batters had at least one hit.
Right fielder Anthony Papio, who went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position Friday, hit a solo home run in the second, scored three runs and went 3-for-4. Second baseman Brandon Lowe hit another solo homer, part of a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
The Terps will take on the Gators on Sunday at noon in the rubber match.
